Recommended Reading

The books I've listed on this page are those that I have personally read and would recommend to my friends and family. I do not receive any sort of compensation for these recommendations. They are simply books that have helped me over the years and I think they could be beneficial for you, too.

If you are new to the world of homeschooling and aren't sure where to start, I'd recommend reading the first two books listed (The Little Book and So You're Thinking About Homeschooling). I found both of these books to be very helpful to me when I first started out.

-----------------------------

This book was written by a former public school teacher who chose to home educate her children. It's a short but compelling book that shows the benefits that homeschooling has on the child's mind, body and soul.

So You're Thinking About Homeschooling by Lisa Whelchel
Fifteen Families Show How You Can Do It!

This is such a great book that takes a look at 15 families and how each has created a unique homeschooling environment that is totally their own. Every family is different and so are the educational needs of the children. This book helps you think "outside the box" about home school and reminds you that no one way is right. It only matters what is right for your family. If you were to ask 15 home school families how they do it, you'll get 15 different ideas! That's the beauty of homeschooling!

They're Your Kids by Mrs. Sam Sorbo

The first half of this book gives an overview of the current state of public education in the United States and it's not pretty. The second half of the book is Mrs. Sam Sorbo's journey out of public school and into the world of homeschooling. She, like many new home school parents, doubted herself and her ability and she shares these challenges with her readers and what she did to overcome them.

*This is a must-read book for all families especially for those whose children attend public school. I personally recommend this to anyone and everyone. It's time we saw public school for what it is - a government institution. Once you read the book, you'll understand why.

Dumbing Us Down
The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Education by John Taylor Gatto

Mr. Gatto was a public high school educator for 30 years who received many awards for his teaching. During that time he concluded that public school actually has little to do with education. It has more to do with teaching young people to conform to the economy and social order. This book reveals the reality of public school and guides parents who seek alternatives to it.

Homeschooling and Loving It!
Create Your Best Homeschooling Year Ever
by Rebecca Kochenderfer

I discovered this book after homeschooling for 3 years and wish I would have found it sooner! The book is designed to help you create a customized plan for you and your family based on your family's needs, interests and ideas. Each chapter finishes with an activity to help guide you in creating this plan. Excellent resource if you're new to homeschooling!
